Impersonation scam is a common scam, to which people fall victim daily. We hear of cases where fraudsters contact you claiming to be a representative from your digital wallet provider or even your bank. They get in touch through either SMS, phone call, email, or social media and ask you to reveal confidential details like your OTP, MPin and Passwords.

While you probably think you’d spot attempts like this, it may not be as easy as you think. Scammers know their onions, which is why they are very successful at stealing people’s money! NIBSS report emphasised this fact.  In the first nine months of 2020, fraudsters were successful on 41,979 occasions out of 46,126 attacks carried out. This might just be a number until it hits close to home with you, a family member or a friend become part of a statistic.

Online criminals are able to mimic well-known institutions, by making it look like a phone call, email, text message or chat is from any financial institution.

Here are our 5 top tips:

1. NowNow will never EVER ask you to share sensitive information such as your OTP, mPin or passcode with any of our agents. This is a huge red flag that you are about to be scammed.

2. Never download a software link if someone claiming to work for NowNow asks you to. They’re only trying to access your personal information to dupe you. Abeg no fall. Shine your eyes well.

3. Never give anyone access to, or control of your device. If you are tempted to, just consider that it contains your ewallet and personal information and you may lose your hard earned cash.

4. Always keep your NowNow app and mobile OS update up to date. Constantly updating can be annoying but these updated software act as a shield against any weak spots that could be exploited by online criminals.

5. Fraudsters can create fake phone numbers, emails and websites to make it look real. But just because it appears to be from a reputable organisation, it doesn’t mean it’s from us. Always check the main source.
